We here at PLANIT believe that an event is not complete without quality lighting. Many people underestimate the power of lighting at events and consider omitting it when budget cuts come into play, this is a big no no in our book. Lighting is something which should never be compromised.

Good lighting can transform a venue and add depth to a space, it can highlight certain features as well as hiding others, it creates an atmosphere.

Here is PLANIT’s complete guide to the most common forms of event lighting and when they should be used.

Uplighting

Uplighting as far as we are concerned is the very foundation of event lighting. Uplighting allows for an instant change in the colour and atmosphere of an event space. They are placed on the ground at intervals around the venue washing the walls or specific features above them with colour. They are commonly known as mood lighting as the colours can easily be changed to reflect the different stages of the event i.e at a wedding. During the meal you may choose warm amber tones and then transform the venue for dancing with pinks and purples.

Profile Lighting

Profile lighting is commonly known as stage lighting which we use at conferences, awards ceremonies, concerts etc. Ultimately, if you have a stage at your event then profile lighting will be required to highlight your speakers, band etc. They are hung from a truss and positioned to shine beams of light at different points onstage.

Gobo Lighting

Gobos allow names, initials, logos and brands to be light projected on to surfaces such as walls and floors. Once a surface is flat you can usually project on to it. Gobos stencils are custom made to your requirements whether it be your company name or the initials of a bride and groom. The stencil can then be attached to either a stationary or moving light to project a hologram.

Pinspots

Pinspots are narrow beams which are focused to highlight certain features around the venue. They can be used to draw attention to such things as products, tables, cakes, floral arrangements – anything really. As well as creating focus, they also add a nice ambiance to a space and look great in photos.

Movers

If you want to create a party atmosphere then movers are essential – most commonly used at awards ceremonies, nightclubs, parties and weddings. They can either be pre-programmed or operated by a lighting technician.
